Uppymama began with a vision of a future where parents could return to the beautiful and ancient practice of babywearing.
At the time spotting a babywearer in public felt only slightly rarer than seeing a unicorn galloping through your front yard.
The SUV stroller reigned supreme and babies were carried everywhere in carseats.
Nonetheless Becky knew that if she could just connect with parents to show them an alternate vision of what their parenting life could be like and show them simple ways to carry their baby close that a return to this the tradition of babywearing was more than possible. It was just a matter of time! As a foster parent, midwifery student, and then a mother and doula, Becky spent over a decade teaching parents to wear their babies and learning what worked in a wrap.
There were less options available for babywearing then and Becky believed that with the right fabric learning to wrap could be even easier! This fabric would be easy to wrap with and easy to tie. Something with just the right amount of grip, stretch, memory, and a fabric that didn’t need to be broken in, ready to use immediately upon its arrival in your home. We have master artisan weavers across Canada, all skilled and talented fibre artists who are amazing at what they do but they are not the whole story!
From start to finish each Uppymama wrap and sling tells its own story of discussions, ideas, photos, layouts, thread, labels and lots of fun in our design and finishing departments. We work closely with our master weavers, so that every one of our Uppymama wraps is both beautiful and up to our high standards of quality.
Our wraps are lovingly created by hand but there’s a whole lot that happens behind the scenes before and after the actual fabric is created. You should know that a whole team of mothers work together (in between naps, swimming lessons, breastfeeding Skype meetings and bedtime jail!) to bring you your beautiful wrap!
